this is strange. people are starving daily, people are losing their jobs daily, more people get depressed daily or get paranoid because they fear the future, japan is hit by an earthquake and radiation from a nuclear station gets into the ocean, in libya the war is still going on
and what is the point of discussion here? the content of some photo pictures of a workshop? if it is 'true' art or not? if they deserve to get published on a digital magazine or not? some of the receivers of this magazine consider themselves as arrogant and do not want the content of the magazine to be send to them? hellooww! do you watch the news? do you read newspapers? wake up! get a life!

photography (or art) is not about photography itself, but it's about life, about real human beings and their relations. it's about feelings like loneliness, sadness, love, joy, anger or happiness. it's a means to reflect on yourself (your inner world) and on your relationship to your family and friends (the outer world). photography can make you travel (and find yourself) or can make you stay at home (and find yourself). all in all it's very interesting, it's creative and it is fun! did you ever try to take pictures yourself?

Dear anonymous copy blah blah,

Thanks for your reply, it’s a masterpiece of absurdity. There couldn’t be a better evidence of what you are. The more you are exposed, the worst for you.

Who do you think you are? And what makes you think you’re important, and therefore one can be afraid of you? Maybe you had some bad childhood years, but it’s not art’s fault.

Regardless all your miserable apologies and obvious lies, your posts in greek and english are a few lines below. People can make their own conclusions...

I didn't and I can't decide anything you silly c***.
Also, I didn't attacked to anyone and call him the
various names that you mentioned (except the talent which
is a personal point of view), I've just criticized
their promoted (to me) work.

If you aren't capable to separate those two then
go and hide to your shepherd cave from where
you apparently came from.

I've expressed my opinion with sincereness
and realism as I need personally to do it that way.
I feel that the world needs more the arrogant cretins
like me in order to have a real chance to get out of the misery
and mediocrity which preserve the mindless billyboys (βλαχάκια)
like you.

You know (sic), in art there aren't the same rules and
processes like the ones that occur when you
fight with your neighbor for the parking place,
or when you are inferior to your colleagues and
you try to survive by licking your boss.
What makes art interesting and it gives it a chance
is anarchy and freedom of criticism.
If I have made an awkward criticism then I am going be
judged (and potentially ridiculed) by history in the
future. No one needs YOU to accelerate that, especially
since you don't seem capable to do it in the first place
and also since you haven't any idea at whom you refer to..

Until then, I have the right to express my self the
way I like, while you don't need the future to be
officially ridiculed as you chose to have it at present by
bitching in a personal manner behind your wonderful anonymity.

My horses can't slow down they are the racing ones, so pick up
your pants and apologize to the mirror not to the "viewers"..

F*** off well.

Congrats to the editor and contributors for the new issue. Although I have serious considerations for many of the works, I find it an extremely interesting issue.

@copylovers of the world:
I agree with the core of your criticism and totally with your minimalistic point of view. The world is full of “personal experimentations” that “published and promoted as an interesting thing to see”.

But the world is also full of arrogant cretins like you, who overconfidently claim they know what is a “good photography”, who decide whose effort “bring us a step forward” or not and then fight them “furiously and with fanaticism”.

I don’t know these guys and I don’t really care about their photographic progress, it is their own choice. But here you call them “emetics” “ruthless” and “untalentent” and you‘re attacking to anybody who disagree with you. Ultimately you may look pretty intelligent, but absolutely ridiculous.

Slow your horses, live and let others live.

Apologies to the viewers for my expressions, but this is what you deserve.

my comment is not irrelevant, don't be sorry about it.
let's try something else.
what's your opinion about the portfolio of andreas tsonidis.
he did not try to imitate the master.
if you look at his web page
www.andreastsonidis.com
you will see that he continued shooting
his own style.

Your comment is totally irrelevant, I am sorry.

Also I didn't receive in my mailbox a mail from
the Picasso Museum with a pdf file containing
those exercises that you mention, suggesting
that this exercises is about "personal experimentations"
of someone or a way to prove someone's creativity
after a workshop with a master.

Try to aim better the next time or let it go.

@Yanis

I take your apologies under consideration.

I respect your effort to support a friend but I feel that
this is totally unnecessary.
Good photography doesn't need someone to propagate it
and your thesis reminds me the people who claim that is a
good thing when kids of the third world starving to death,
as we need to be less in order to survive.
I mean, this is somehow right but at the same time is terminally wrong.
The thing is that your friend's photos are published and sent to me
as a proposal for something interesting (or useful) to see.
I receive WIP issues since its beginning and this is the first time
I decided to add a comment.
Since I am not a photographer or an art evaluator but, lets say, an
experienced viewer, I believe in the law of minimalism.
If something is not worthy to see then I don't see any reason to see it.
Your friend's (or your classmate's) photos is a fine example of what
one shall NOT do and they are not even constitute an educational
reason to exist.
This photography is just an effort to copy a master and an example to
be avoided by all means (maybe this is the only purpose of it).
We don't need photography as we need, for example, food-water
sex-friends, and therefore there isn't any particular reason for
"personal experimentations" or "private battlefields" to be published
and promoted as an interesting thing to see if they are not presenting
something new, something that Ill need to come back and see it again.
I mean, if I am thirsty or hungry to death I could eat from rubbish and
drink polluted water, I cannot live otherwise, but a bad portfolio is not
going to make any good, even if there are 10 years since I have looked
a single photograph.

So, is not a matter of genius or not, my friend Yanis, is simply about a
step forward using an artistic medium like photography is.
If you got something that it could bring us a step forward I will respect
it with all my heart, like if it was mine, regardless you're a genius or
stupid, regardless it is an experimentation or an established product.
But if you try to convince me that any step (left-right or backwards) is
something useful just because its a step, then I will fight you furiously
and with fanaticism.

Also is not a matter of luck at all. Antoine D'Agata spent his life and
his energy photographing the way he does and his key to success was
that his goal wasn't to show his findings but to bring himself a step
further. He couldn't do it otherwise.
Therefore you understand, I suppose, that using your relatives in order
to produce quickly the exact photography as D'Agata did, is kind of
ridiculous and for my taste not acceptable to be published. Its totally ill.

Thank you for switching this conversation to english and congrats
for your ability to write in such a manner.

@copylovers of the world

Unfortunately (or even fortunately), not everyone is born a genius. Often we need to walk on the footsteps of significant others before we feel ready to attempt our own. This is one of the best ways we learn.

In any case, I don't see why an individual's effort to explore a previously unexplored territory for him/her is not worthwhile, and why it should not be considered as experimentation (at least by themselves).

Reading the testimonies of the participants in the workshop, I had no doubt that they all felt the time they spent with D'Agata really influenced their approach to photography and their prospective for their own work. Well, this sounds like the ideal class to me and congratulations to the teacher for managing in such a short time to have such an impact to the students, but also to them too, as they had to offer a piece of themselves in order for this to work.

Should we really expect a class, course, or seminar to generate prodigies, and doom it as a failure when it doesn't succeed in that?

I believe 'experimentation' is a personal matter; a private battlefield where we struggle to better ourselves by pushing OUR OWN boundaries. It is just that, in this process, some people, in some rare cases, happen or manage to unlock a door to a territory new, not only to themselves, but to everyone else too.

But we are not all that lucky, talented, or clever. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

We don't need words, neither thoughts. It's not enough. We need good photographs. I don't see any composition, I don't see imagination. I don't see powerful vision. A Blurred and out of focus photograph is not necessarily art. Don't try to copy d'Agata. It's so easy. Don't make it badly and ugly. Get out and make good photos!

Great issue with strong photographs.
I especially liked the photographs of voulgarakis and tsagari.
Voulgarakis and tsagari photographs represent a raw reality with truthfulness on their behalf with no need of "style" power in order to get to us.

Keep up the good work ..and photographically enlighten us

another issue of wip including good pictures!
the powerful portfolio of alexia tsagari should be published in a sunday magazine to be shared with more people, ouside the photographic community.
the portfolio of thekla malamou is well balanced in its aesthetics and quality.
some pictures by maria mitzali, stratis vogiatzis and andreas tsonidis are great. i have the impression that these photographers are on their way to make a substantial move in their photographic career.
ps. the explicit representation of scars, genitals, sexual or violent acts do not make any picture a good picture. there must be something more that this.

'sad' as a situation that represents man. if art is sad there will be good photography there, as ian sais. but 'sad'. 'sad' is a constant variable of the world we live in. so as an artist should u choose to show a ray of light or should u choose too show life as its the popular view? lifes pop, hence sad photography. but documentary photographers have been mislead. the times were depicting the "cruel" side of life was cool is long gone. now its just sad. maybe you documentary photographers should focus on how people manage to make ends meet? but hey, the definition of the word ethical has taken a long non returning trip; the 'sadness' of what Ian describes has done the same. its a matter of choice. u think u dont have the choice and u blame the world.
